Day 7 - Touring New Haven

Day 7 dawned fine and dry. We breakfasted in "The Gatehouse" with a large number of guests. After breakfast we caught the shuttle bus to the Yale School of Nursing. Sue went in to find her office and connections whilst I went touring. I headed up past the  Yale-New Haven Hospital along Cedar Street then York Street. At Chapel Street I turned left and stopped for a coffee at a nice coffee shop. I then headed up Park Street toward Broadway, passing some quaint old houses and students' colleges.

The first church of note that I passed was Thomas More Chapel (http://stm.yale.edu ).

This was followed closely up on Broadway by Christ Church ( http://www.christchurchnh.org ), a bluestone Gothic church.

I then headed along Tower Parkway, so called I expect because of the numerous towers - a bit like San Gimignano but more modern. I passed Morse College and the Hall of Graduate Studies. The next block was wholly occupied by the Sterling Law buildings, a magnificent complex. Nearby was the Sterling Library ( http://www.library.yale.edu/rsc/sml/ ) which was designed as a cathedral. It houses the biggest collection of books of any College library in the USA.

The next building is described on the map as "Book and Snake", an old marble building with columned portico surrounded by a fence with intertwining snakes - possibly an old medical building.

Behind that lies the grand Dining Hall which seats 1200 - modelled on dining hall at Cambridge, UK used in the Harry Potter movies

 - and a modern marbled building  - the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library (just to the right in the above picture - http://www.library.yale.edu/beinecke/). This is a magnificent structure with some very old tomes, including a rare Gutenberg Bible.

By this stage my left foot was paining me so I headed across New Haven Green back to Chapel Street. Sue and I met for lunch at the Book Trader Cafe - a busy spot with tasty treats and lots of second-hand books.

After lunch I went back to our suite to ice my foot, while Sue went back to the Yale Nursing School to continue working. Sue intended to leave the School at 5:00 but could not get a taxi - apparently the system was down - so she did not return to the suite until almost 7:00. We just had Lean Cuisines for dinner.
