Saturday September 15

We slept in this morning, so missed the hotel breakfast. We needed to catch the tour bus from Stop 3, so we walked over to Little Italy and found a deli where we bought some fresh bread rolls, sliced cheese and ham with a couple of drinks. We then found a bench to sit on in a park to have brunch - delicious!

After waiting about 10 minutes a Boston Upper Deck Trolley tour bus arrived to take us across the water to Bunker Hill and the US Navy dockyards, where the famed USS Constitution (Old Ironside) is berthed.

We stayed on the bus to stop 4a where we changed 'vessels', boarding their Army duck for the 'Big Splash Tour". This was an enjoyable 45 minute tour of the inner harbour, from where we saw the USS Constitution, an EPA ship, some tugboats and barges, and the Coast Guard pulling over a motor boat.

From there we went on a normal tour bus to the next exchange, which was for a tour through Cambridge to the centre of Harvard University campus, past Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) which is also a renowned institution of higher learning. We opted for a self-guided tour of the campus, finding it quite historic, with some beautiful buildings.

We caught the last tour bus back to the changing point, and continued back into Boston proper. We skirted the Boston Common, where a massive party was happening. After driving past some old buildings in the Beacon Hill area we alighted to sample some beers at the famous TV pub Cheers ( http://www.cheersboston.com/ ).

From there we walked around the corner into a street of shops which had Olde Worlde charm. We had a coffee and sampled some Italian cakes. Then we caught a cab back to our hotel to freshen up for dinner. We walked back to Little Italy's Salem Street and found a table in a nice-looking resturant - Mozzarella Bar e Ristorante. Sue ordered the pan-seared salmon, which was a good size and well cooked. I ordered a clam and pasta dish which I could barely eat as it was too spicy - not sure if it was chili or black pepper.

We then went for a walk along the street and up to Hanover Street. We stopped at a Gelato shop for some dessert, then called in at a biscotti shop for some samples to have on the train back to New Haven Sunday - Yummm!!
