New Haven - Friday Sept 6 - Sunday Sept 9

On Friday I did another tour of the campus, meeting Sue for lunch at Woodland cafe, just off Chapel Street ( http://www.woodlandcoffee.com/ ). I went to the Architecture building to view the Exhibition on the famous 16th C architect Palladio. I found it very interesting.

When Sue finished work she caught the Yale Red shuttle to New Haven Green where we met. I took her to Radio Shack where she bought a stylus to help her to type messages on her new Samsung SII 'Smart'phone. From there we went around to Black Bear Saloon for a drink and to watch some tennis. We were going to have dinner at the suite, but decided to have an appetizer of sliders at the Saloon. As we did not know how big Sliders were, and thinking they were just bite-sized, we ordered three different types - mini burger, chicken salad and salmon. Each of these came out in groups of three, each one about 1/2 the size of a normal burger!! By the time we had eaten our way through the 9 burgers we didn't have room for any dinner.

The Saloon was going to be busy later with a fund-raiser for Polycystic Kidney Disease research, so we had a chat with the manager, whose mother had died from it earlier this year. We made a donation, which went towards the $3500 made on the night.

Saturday: We caught the shuttle into the Green, and I took Sue up to the Yale Art Gallery, primarily to see the Impressionist works. First, Sue did a tour of the special exhibition of photographs by Robert Adams. She was interested in the Asian art, but she became more animated as we reached the section with the Renoirs, Monets, Manets, van Goghs, etc. - not to mention Rodin's Thinker.

We then went down to the ground floor to look at the old coins, busts and other objects from the early and pre-Christian eras.

After buying a book about the recent acquisitions, we headed over the road to Atticus for a cuppa and a scone. NOT scones as in our ones with jam and cream, but fruit scones baked quite firm on the outside and crumbly inside. Then we walked up to the Sterling library, where Sue spoke with an assistant about how she could access the on-line catalogues. While not fully satisfied with the outcome here, she was able to enter the system later at the suite based on what she had been shown.

We then went to the Beinecke Rare Book library where I showed her the Gutenberg Bible and the Audubon Bird Books on double-elephant sized paper.

From there we went to the Barnes and Noble store to buy a sweater and t-shirt as memorabilia. By the time we had finished there my foot was bad so we dawdled back to Chapel Street where we hailed a cab home. We cooked dinner in the suite tonight.

Sunday: We stayed at the suite today so Sue could do some work on her Research Grant application. I was able to watch some tennis and gridiron and generally relax. Later in the day I helped Sue with some edits of her work to date. Again we cooked dinner in the suite.
